Great Expressions
Happy President's Day weekend everyone. I especially liked the expressions in this photo that was again taken with the Brownie. Although the woman with the hat appears as if she's flexing her arm, she's looking at her cell phone. The guy in the green smiling seems to be amused at her pose. The hairstyle and the fashion of the woman with the handbag made this photo look like it was taken from an earlier time period like the 70's although it was taken two weeks ago at the Punahou Carnival. When I look at this picture, it evokes a feel of a California beach and boardwalk for me.

Double Exposure
Another photo from the Brownie Hawkeye. It's a double exposure and without any adjustments. Out of all of the photos on this roll of film, this was probably the most interesting.

Childhood Dreams and Fantasy
Capturing the fun and joy in the eyes of these four girls on a helicopter ride at the Punahou Carnival was absolute amusement for me. Although a bit grainy and fuzzy, it captures the dizzying feeling of games, fun, childhood dreams, and fantasy. If only life was always as simple and fun as a carnival ride.

Rides, Cotton Candy, Candied Apples, Games
Carnivals are always fun with rides, cotton candy, candied apples, and games. Once a year, Punahou School puts on a carnival that brings together the community and people from all around town. I brought my Brownie Hawkeye to take some film shots and if they're any good after development, you'll get a peek.

An Off-the-Hook Performance
Chinese New Year is always very festive and celebratory. Tonight was action packed with martial arts, dragon and lion dances, crafts, and a variety of food vendors at the Chinese Cultural Plaza. The Wah Ngai Lion Dance Association showed off their lion pole dancing skills with their off the hook performance. They hopped and skipped to the beat of the drums and cymbals and moved so smoothly over the poles that it appeared as if the lion had no fear of falling. They had the crowd in the palm of their hands with each movement that the lion made. They cheered, whistled, and at times even cringed for the performers when the lion hit each daring step with perilous precision.

Year of the Dragon
This weekend in Honolulu Chinatown were the new year celebrations with food booths, vendors, and martial arts performers who filled the streets and stages. This little girl was in the spirit of giving a dollar the Chinese lion for a year of good luck. It's the year of the dragon in 2012 which is the end of a lunar cycle.

Handmade Holiday Market
There was a Handmade Holiday Market at Manoa Marketplace today where individual craftsmen lined up their booths and sold their handmade items. This one stood out in particular because of it's detail. The woman used wool to make these lifelike Christmas ornaments that looked simple but she described it as labor intensive. Click here to see more photos on Baby aWEARness' facebook page, the organizer of the Handmade Holiday.

Ilikai 7:45p.m.
Every Friday evening at 7:45p.m. for the past many years, the Ilikai hotel in Waikiki faithfully launches a firework show. In the summer, the beach is packed with families, children, tourists, and surfers who become mesmerized by the booms and the bangs of the rockets that illuminate the sky and cityscape. The smell of bar-b-que linger and groups of beachgoers bond with food. Tonight, the crowd was sparse and the weather was cool. Perhaps most were indoors at the malls.

University of Hawaii Art Gallery
Happy Sunday everyone! I was at the University of Hawaii art gallery today and they are featuring a ceramic show called "East-West Ceramic Collaboration V"with artists from the Pacific Rim until December 9, 2011. The show is free to the public and there the artists are internationally known. One of my favorite pieces is the above cup for it's simpleness and because it is a functional piece. Other works are detailed sculptures and other vessels. One artist used a paintball gun to shoot the glaze on his plates for a splash finish. Influenced by Hawaii's shaved ice, the colors on these plates represent the rainbow of flavors. The holiday season is now in motion and the traffic in the U.H. gallery has been slow, thus if you live here, feel free to take a peek at no charge! Click here to see some of the other pieces on display on facebook.

A Fun Saturday
A local fair with all kinds of good eats, rock climbing, games and prizes, art for sale, mini rides, face tattoos, a hair spray booth, and a horseback riding area made a Saturday afternoon a fun one. This horse had his way, feeding whenever he wanted making each ride just a bit longer for the kids. A bad habit for horse people but a great reward for this guy!

Art and Flea
Every Thursday evening in the heart of the industrial district in downtown Honolulu off of Queen Street, there is Art and Flea. Vendors selling vintage items, collectibles, handcrafted items, and interesting knick knacks gather to fill the parking lot and the entire space of a local coffee house/cafe', Fresh Cafe'. Twirlers twirl their LED hula hoops, the DJ spins his records, and the people gather to be a part of an exciting and hip mini-market. A youthful and energetic crowd 20's and 30's roam the market in search for unique items. I purchased a domino set that was handcrafted out walnut wood with gold metal inlay for $8. Click here to see today's outtake on facebook.
