Enter or Escape

On March 30th, I hope to have a collection of Red Balloon photos from followers and others to post on this blog. Here's how to do it... I thought that it would be a good project to roam around Honolulu to capture other shots of the Red Balloon but then again, I thought why not offer the idea to all of you beautiful bloggers and photographers out there. The shots would be completely international. If you are interested, please feel free to submit an 8x10 image at 72 dpi via email, of your rendition of the Red Balloon along with the photographer's name and the location (country, city, street) that it was taken. Your photograph with a  credit to the photographer shall be posted on March 30th as a collection and as a tribute to the film. It will be a fun collection that you could be a part of!!!! As my disclaimer, this is not for money and not for profit. It's all in the name of fun!

The Voyeur

Across the way is the Hawaii Theater and in the parking of Mark's Garage  and a wonderful opportunity to capture another Red Balloon image. I call this one, "The Voyeur".

In 20 days, I'd like to post your picture of your rendition of the Red Balloon being that it would be fun to see what everyone comes up with in their home town. Photo credit will be given to all photographers.

Fish

The benefits of having a friend whose dad is a sushi chef is of course the best sashimi fish for dinner. Pictured is a beautiful onaga, salmon cuts, fresh ahi, a tray of uni, and abalone. Other dishes served were rib eye, sauteed clams, and a variety of sushi. Thanks for the invite!

Pick It and It Shall Rain

One folklore of the Ala Lehua flower is that if you pick it off the tree during a hike, it will begin to rain. As for this little beauty, no one had to own it and it still rained all weekend. It was the only one on this tree and at full blossom it lured me over with it's bright color.

Santa's Toy Shop

Every Christmas, it is tradition for Honolulu City Hall to deck it's halls with holiday cheer. There are Christmas trees lined up in the lobby with a life size gingerbread house in the center and Santa taking photos with the kids, a giant snow globe with moving polar bears, and lots of lights for that winter sparkle. Above is one of the displays. Click here to see a photo of the gingerbread house.

Angry Korean Lady

Jars of Kim Chee on the Roof of Mu Ryang Sa
The Ah Lang Korean restaurant in downtown Kakaako district is owned by the "angry Korean lady" (click on the link to see more about Ah-Lang). She is known for having great Korean cuisine with reasonable prices and most of all being pissed off if you don't follow the rules of her shop. Before going there, we visited the Mu Ryang Sa Korean Buddhist Temple in Palolo to see the jars of pickled kim chee cabbage fermenting on building roof top to prepare ourselves for our excursion to Ah Lang. Because the angry Korean lady is a one woman show, she is the cook, the wait help, the bus person, the host, the cashier, the shopper, etc... She has rules in place that you must follow or be subjected to a tongue lashing and maybe refused. Here are some of those rules: You must seat yourself, you must write down your own order, you must choose how spicy your dishes are by using her number system of 0 to 8 (8 being the spiciest), food comes first then water, you must pay in cash if your order is under $50, if you bring alcohol then you must bring some for her or else there is a corkage fee, etc... The wait was long but the food was well worth the wait. We were her last customers of the day and so we conversed with her a bit about her kim chee cabbage before she ran out to buy ingredients for dinner and left us in the shop by ourselves. Apparently she purchases fresh ingredients for every meal and she ferments her own kim chee as she brought out half a head of cabbage to show us and for me to photograph. Click here to see the kim chee that the angry Korean lady brought out. I don't want to ruin her reputation but she turned out to be quite a character and a cool lady. The food is a ten out of ten and I would definitely go back but only with time to wait.

Red Flyer

This retro Red Flyer tricycle was part of bulk pick up and grouped with a bunch of trash. Granted that parts of it was rusted and in pretty bad shape it might have been able to be restored by the right person with the time and tools. It was a heavy tricycle made of steel. The bell didn't work and the wheels didn't turn very freely. This tricycle marks a period when toys were solidly made with metal in the U.S.

Red Rain

It began to drizzle, then rain, then heavily, and then it stopped. It then began to drizzle again, then the sun came out, then it rained again. This was the kind of weather we had today.

Vibrant Plastic Sweepers

Click here to see more photos of Chinatown on facebook

Happy Tuesday everyone. Without the colorful dustpans and brooms, this alleyway would be just an ordinary narrow passageway. The Chinatown shop to the right of these vibrant plastic brooms was packed with small medium and large steel bowls, metal strainers with bamboo handles, cleaning supplies, various pots and pans, aluminum stacking steamers, cutting boards, knives, etc... Thus, these sweepers were stored here for space.

Drip Drop Drip

This cluster of flowers popped out like maraschino cherries. An early drizzle subsided and it was sunrise.  I was inspired by the color red. What type of flower is this? Does anyone know? I'd like to know!
