The Fourth Day of Christmas

On the fourth day of Christmas my tutu give to me four flower leis,

Pick It and It Shall Rain

 

One folklore of the Ala Lehua flower is that if you pick it off the tree during a hike, it will begin to rain. As for this little beauty, no one had to own it and it still rained all weekend. It was the only one on this tree and at full blossom it lured me over with it's bright color.

Honolulu Academy of Arts - Anna Cooke

The Honolulu Academy of Arts was originally the home to the Rice missionaries on Oahu. The Rice family had three kids and as they prospered, they purchased works of art for their home on Beratania Street. Daughter Anna Rice married and became a part of another missionary family becoming Anna Cooke. She continued purchasing art and importing pieces from China until there was more art than their home could hold. She decided to have their Beratania home torn down in the 1920's to build a museum for their large collection. The Honolulu Academy of Arts was opened in 1927. The above photo is of the dragon fountain located in rear of the pond.

A Double Hibiscus

Hibiscus are recognized as the State's flower and they blossom in colors red, yellow, white, and pink. This version of the flower is a double hibiscus. Usually with only five petals, this one has double the petals which makes it much fuller and robust looking.

Kamehameha Swap Meet

The Kamehameha swap meet is open to buyers and sellers three times a week on the weekends and on Wednesdays. There may be a deal on something that may be worthless to someone but a gem to yet another. For sale were yellow ballet shoes hanging on a bike, power and hand-held tools, bright aloha print clothing, mechanical parts mixed with baby items, vintage fans placed next to vhs tapes and glass vases, coconut juice straight from the nut, a section for meats and vegetables, etc... It has been over ten years since the last time I had visited this swap meet and it is exactly the way I remembered it to be less the collectors who had their hands in a little bit of everything.

Makiki Community Garden

Ms. Shirley, a green thumb gardener at the Makiki Community Garden grows her air plants, flowers, herbs, and other vegetation for the love of gardening. With over a 100 plots in a section of the Makiki District Park, gardeners of all levels water life into flowers such as daisies and roses, vegetables such as eggplant and lettuce, herbs such as basil and thyme, and low maintenance plants such as cactus and air plants.

Drip Drop Drip

This cluster of flowers popped out like maraschino cherries. An early drizzle subsided and it was sunrise.  I was inspired by the color red. What type of flower is this? Does anyone know? I'd like to know!
